Frequently Asked Questions
Every art therapy session may look a little different depending on the needs or goals of the participant but will most often begin with some communication between the participant and the therapist and then will move into art making or creative expression for majority if the session, followed by some reflection before wrapping up together. However, if the participant does not want to talk that's also okay! An art therapy session may involve painting or drawing, clay-making, walking in the park or even playing games. Sessions are tailored to the participants individual needs, goals, and comfort level, and may be structured or open-ended depending on what feels most supportive to the individual.
Not at all! No artistic experience or ability is required to attend art therapy as an art therapy session is not an art lesson and does not focus on learning techniques or creating “good” artwork. Instead, the emphasis is on using creative expression as a therapeutic tool to explore thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a supportive environment. There is no right or wrong way to engage in art therapy
YES! Art therapy is recognised as an evidence-based therapeutic approach, supported by a growing body of research. Studies show it can be effective for people of all ages across a range of mental health and neurological conditions, including anxiety, depression, trauma, and mood disorders. Art therapy is also widely used to support individuals living with neurodivergence, disability, and chronic illness, and is delivered by qualified practitioners within established ethical and clinical frameworks.
Art therapy can benefit every age range from children, adolescents, and adults. It may be helpful for people experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, stress or emotional regulation difficulties and can support people living with neurodivergence, disability, chronic illness, or experience life transitions.
Mel can support participants of any age however has over 5 years of experience supporting children and young adults ages 5-25. If you are over 25 you are still more than welcome to reach out and organise a free consult for you to determine if Mel might be the right fit for you!
Standard sessions are 50-60 minutes and occur either weekly or fortnightly. Longer or more frequent sessions may be arranged if specifically requested
Private art therapy services are charged at $180 per hour. An invoice is issued after the session and is required to be paid within 7 days of the appointment.
Art therapy may be funded through the NDIS under specific Capacity Building or Early Childhood Supports line items, depending on your plan and goals. Self-managed and plan-managed participants are accepted.
Yes. Art therapy sessions are confidential, with information shared only in line with legal and ethical obligations.
Participants are required to provide a minimum of 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice may incur the full session fee, unless an exception is made due to unforeseen circumstances at the therapist’s discretion.
